    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is a legal translation?

A legal translation is the specialised translation of documents with legal effect — such as contracts, court documents, powers of attorney, legal opinions and deeds. It requires not only language proficiency, but also the ability to accurately transfer legal meaning between different legal systems.

    Why choose lawyer-linguists?

Because a literal translation of legal terminology can change the intended meaning and create legal risk. Lawyer-linguists understand how concepts differ across jurisdictions and translate in a way that preserves the correct legal effect.

Are your translations officially valid — certified or sworn?

Yes. Our translations are commonly used by courts, registries, AIMA and consular services. Where certification is required, we can arrange a lawyer-certified translation in accordance with the applicable requirements.

    When is certification required?

Whenever the receiving authority requests a formal declaration of accuracy/certification — for example for immigration, visas, nationality/citizenship procedures, or academic recognition. Requirements vary by destination and institution, so we assess this case by case.

Do you work with individuals or only with companies?

We work with both. We support individuals with official documents (e.g., certificates, diplomas, ID documents) and we support companies, law firms and legal departments with corporate and litigation documentation. Every project is handled with the same rigour and confidentiality.

    What are your turnaround times?

Turnaround depends on the length and complexity of the documents and the language pair. We always confirm the delivery date in advance and can prioritise urgent requests whenever possible.

    How is pricing calculated?

Pricing is typically based on word count, language pair, complexity and delivery deadline. We always provide a free, no-obligation quote.

    Which languages do you cover?

Portuguese, English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Dutch, Romanian, Polish, Russian, Arabic and Mandarin are among our most requested languages. We also translate additional languages upon request.

How will I receive the translated documents?

Depending on the project, we deliver by email in PDF/Word/Excel, and where required we can also arrange physical delivery. You can send us your documents digitally (a scan or a photo) or deliver them in person.

    Do you handle nationality processes?

We provide certified translations of the documentation required for nationality/citizenship procedures. For legal advice on the process itself, we recommend consulting a lawyer specialising in the relevant jurisdiction and/or the competent authority.

    What is the Hague Apostille?

The Hague Apostille is a certification that authenticates the origin of a public document for use in another country that is party to the Hague Convention. We can advise on whether it is required and, if you wish, arrange the Hague Apostille in Portugal.
